Privacy Policy

Ethiopian Calendar ("we", "us") makes the Ethiopian Calendar app for iPhone, iPad and Android, and the website ethiopiancalendar.app. This policy explains what information the app and website handle, who else receives it, and what choices you have.
The app is free and supported by ads. A one-time Pro purchase removes ads and unlocks extra features.
The short version
- An account is optional. Without one, your events, tasks, notes and settings stay on your device.
- If you sign in with Google or Apple, we store your name, email address and the agenda and settings you choose to sync, so they appear on all your devices. You can delete your account and this data at any time in the app.
- Analytics, crash reports and ads come from Google (Firebase and AdMob). They collect some device and usage data, described below.
- Location, calendar and photo access are optional. Each is used only for the feature you turn on.
Information stored on your device
Events, tasks and notes you add, reminders, your language, theme and calendar preferences, widget data, and whether you own Pro are stored on your device. On iPhone, the home screen widgets read this data from storage shared with the app on the same device. Reminders are local notifications created on your device. Deleting the app removes this data from the device.
Optional account and sync
You can use the app without an account. If you choose to sign in with Google or with Apple, we use Firebase Authentication (a Google service) to create your account and Cloud Firestore to store your synced data.
- Account details: your name, email address and profile photo as shared by Google or Apple, plus an account identifier. With Sign in with Apple you can choose to hide your email address; Apple then gives us a private relay address.
- Synced content: the events, tasks and notes you add (titles, descriptions, locations, dates, times, repeat settings and reminder times), and your app preferences such as language, theme, calendar choices and holiday, fasting and reminder settings.
- Pro on your account: if you own Pro, we record that on your account so it unlocks your other devices. To confirm the purchase, the app sends the store's purchase receipt (a Google Play purchase token or an App Store signed transaction) to our server, which checks it with Google or Apple. We do not receive payment details.
We use this data only to sign you in, keep your devices in sync and provide Pro. Only you can read your synced data; it is not used for advertising or analytics and is not sold or shared, except with Google, which hosts it for us. Device calendar events shown in the app and the list of device calendars you pick are not synced.
You can also sign in on our website at ethiopiancalendar.app/app with the same Google or Apple account to view and edit your synced events, tasks and notes in a browser. Changes made there are saved to the same account and sync to your devices; your browser keeps you signed in until you sign out.
Signing out stops syncing and leaves your data on the device. To delete your account, open the menu, tap your account, then Delete account. This permanently removes your account and everything synced to it from our servers. A copy stays on your device until you delete it there.
Permissions the app may ask for
All of these are optional. You can change them at any time in your device settings.
- Calendars (iPhone and iPad): to show events from your calendars next to Ethiopian dates and, if you choose, to save events you create in the app to your calendar. This information is not sent to us.
- Location: only when you tap to use your location in Weather. The app asks for approximate location (about 1 km). The coordinates are sent to the weather service described below to get a forecast.
- Photos (add only): to save date and holiday cards you create. The app cannot read your photo library.
- Notifications: to show event and holiday reminders.
Information collected by third-party services
The app includes software from Google. These services may receive information from your device when you use the app.
Firebase Analytics
We use it to see how features are used, for example which screens are opened and which settings are changed (such as language or theme). The events do not include your name, your email address or the contents of your events. Firebase also collects some information automatically, such as device model, operating system and app version, language, an identifier for the app installation, and approximate location based on your IP address.
Firebase Crashlytics
If the app crashes, a report is sent with technical details about the crash, your device model and operating system version, and an identifier for the app installation. We use it to find and fix bugs.
Google AdMob
The free version shows banner ads. AdMob may collect your device's advertising identifier, IP address, approximate location, and information about ads you see and tap, in order to show and measure ads. On iPhone and iPad the advertising identifier is only used if you allow tracking when asked. Where the law requires it, such as in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the app shows a consent form before ads load. Buying Pro removes ads from the app.
To learn more about how Google handles this data:
Content and services the app connects to
- Weather: forecasts come from Open-Meteo. It receives the coordinates of the city you picked, or of your approximate location if you chose that, along with your IP address as part of the request. We do not store these coordinates on our servers.
- News and football scores: these come from our own servers, hosted on Google Cloud. The app sends the language you selected and, for football, the league, season and time zone. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP address and request time, for security and operations.
- Greeting cards and holiday content: the app downloads card artwork and holiday information from our Firebase project.
- Links: some screens link to other websites, such as Wikipedia. Those sites have their own privacy policies.
Purchases
The Pro purchase is handled by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We do not receive your payment details. The app checks with the store to confirm that you own Pro. If you are signed in, the purchase is also verified by our server and linked to your account, as described above.
This website
ethiopiancalendar.app uses Google Analytics to see which pages are visited and which links and buttons are used, such as the app store badges. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects your approximate location based on your IP address, and your browser and device type. The signed-in web app at ethiopiancalendar.app/app sends the same kind of usage events, for example when you sign in or add, edit or delete an event, task or note; these events do not include the content of what you added. The calendar and date converter on the site run in your browser and do not send the dates you enter to us. The site loads its fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google's servers when the page opens. Like any website, our hosting provider may keep standard server logs.
See Google's Privacy Policy for how Google Analytics handles this data.
If you're visiting from the EU, the UK or the EEA, we ask before turning analytics cookies on. You can change your answer any time with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of the page.
Your choices
- Tracking on iPhone and iPad: turn it off in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. You can also reset your advertising identifier there.
- Advertising on Android: manage or reset your advertising ID in your Google settings.
- Permissions: change or revoke location, calendar, photos and notification access in your device settings.
- Ads: buy Pro to remove them.
- Your account: sign out, or delete your account and all synced data, from the account screen in the app.
- Your data on the device: delete the app to remove it.
If you don't sign in, we do not know who you are, so we usually cannot look up data about a specific person. If you have an account, you can delete it and its data yourself in the app. If you live somewhere with privacy rights, such as the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or California, and want to access, correct or export your data, email us and we will help.
Security
We try to protect information with commercially reasonable measures. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children's privacy
The app is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the new version on this page and change the date at the top.
