Days Between Two Datesየቀናት ብዛት ማስያ
Pick a start and an end date in either calendar to see how many days are between them, plus the same span in weeks, Ethiopian months and Gregorian months.
How the days are counted
The total is the number of real days from the start date to the end date. It is the same whichever calendar you enter the dates in, because both calendars count the same days; only the names of the days differ.
By default the end date is not counted, the same way you would say Monday to Tuesday is one day. Turn on “Include the end date” when you want both days counted, for example the length of a holiday, a fast or a hospital stay where the first and last days both count. That adds exactly one day.
If the end date is before the start date, the tool still counts the gap and tells you the end date comes first. The swap button puts the dates in order.
Why Ethiopian months and Gregorian months give different answers
Every Ethiopian month has 30 days, except Pagume, the 13th month, which has 5 days, or 6 in a leap year. Gregorian months have 28 to 31 days. So the same span can be a whole month in one calendar and not in the other: Tir 1 to Yekatit 1, 2018 is exactly 1 Ethiopian month, but on the Gregorian calendar it runs from January 9 to February 8, 2026, which is 30 days and not quite a month.
Pagume counts as a full month even though it is short. From Nehase 10 to Meskerem 10 is 2 Ethiopian months (Nehase 10 to Pagume 5 or 6, then to Meskerem 10), but only 35 or 36 days. The total days are always exact; the month figures depend on the calendar.
Pagume and leap years
From Nehase 30 to Meskerem 1 there are 6 days in a normal year and 7 in a leap year, because all of Pagume falls in between. An Ethiopian leap year comes every four years, in the Ethiopian year that ends just before a Gregorian leap year. 2019 E.C. is one: Pagume 6, 2019 falls on September 11, 2027, and Enkutatash (Meskerem 1, 2020) moves to September 12.
The Gregorian leap day, February 29, falls inside the Ethiopian month of Yekatit. Because the total is counted in real days, both kinds of leap day are already included.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are there until Enkutatash?
The tool opens with today as the start date and Meskerem 1 of the next Ethiopian year as the end date, so the total shown on load is the number of days left until Enkutatash.
Should I include the end date?
Leave it off to count the gap between two dates (Monday to Tuesday is 1 day). Turn it on to count every day in the range, including both the first and last day (Monday to Tuesday is 2 days).
Why do the Ethiopian and Gregorian months not match?
Ethiopian months are all 30 days, plus the 5 or 6 day month of Pagume, while Gregorian months have 28 to 31 days. The number of days is the same in both, but the same span can add up to a different number of whole months.
How many days are in an Ethiopian year?
365 days, or 366 in a leap year: twelve months of 30 days plus Pagume, which has 5 days, or 6 in a leap year.
Can I enter one date in Ethiopian and the other in Gregorian?
Yes. Each date has its own Ethiopian / Gregorian switch, and both dates are shown in both calendars with the day of the week.
