How Ge'ez numbers work
Ge'ez numerals, the numbers used with the Ethiopic script for Amharic, Tigrinya and Ge'ez, have no zero and no place-value digits. Instead there are 20 symbols: ፩ to ፱ for 1 to 9, ፲ to ፺ for the tens 10 to 90, ፻ for 100 and ፼ for 10,000.
Numbers from 1 to 99 are written as a tens symbol followed by a ones symbol, so 12 is ፲፪ and 45 is ፵፭. Because there is no zero, 20 is just ፳ and 105 is ፻፭, with nothing in the empty place.
Hundreds, thousands and ፼
Hundreds are counted by writing a number from 2 to 99 in front of ፻: 200 is ፪፻ and 1,000 is ten hundreds, ፲፻. A 1 in front is left out, so 100 is ፻, not ፩፻. The year 2019 is ፳፻፲፱: twenty hundreds, then nineteen.
፼ works the same way for ten thousands: 10,000 is ፼, 20,000 is ፪፼ and 1,000,000 is a hundred ten-thousands, ፻፼. In practice you split the number into pairs of digits from the right and join the pairs with ፻ and ፼ in turn.
Where Ge'ez numbers are used
Arabic digits are used for most everyday counting in Ethiopia and Eritrea, but Ge'ez numerals still appear on calendars, in church books and on formal or traditional documents, often for dates, years and page or chapter numbers.

Frequently asked questions
How do you write 100 in Ge'ez?
100 is ፻. There is no 1 in front of it: ፩፻ is not used. 200 is ፪፻, 300 is ፫፻ and so on up to 9,900, ፺፱፻.
Is there a zero in Ge'ez numbers?
No. The Ge'ez system has no symbol for zero. An empty place is simply left out, so 101 is ፻፩ and 10,000 is ፼ on its own.
How do you write 1,000 in Ge'ez?
1,000 is ten hundreds, written ፲፻. There is no separate symbol for a thousand. 2,000 is ፳፻ and 5,000 is ፶፻.
How do you write the year 2019 in Ge'ez numerals?
2019 is ፳፻፲፱ (twenty hundreds and nineteen). The same pattern works for any year, so 2018 is ፳፻፲፰ and 1999 is ፲፱፻፺፱.
Are Amharic numbers the same as Ge'ez numbers?
Yes. Amharic and Tigrinya use the Ge'ez numerals, so “Amharic numbers” and “Ethiopian numbers” usually mean the same symbols. The spoken Amharic words, such as አንድ (one) and ሁለት (two), are shown next to each symbol in the table above.
