Ethiopian Holiday Countdownስንት ቀን ቀረው?
See how many days are left until Ethiopian New Year, Meskel, Genna, Timket or Fasika, or count down to your Ethiopian birthday or any date you pick.
How the countdown works
The countdown counts whole calendar days from today, using the date on your device. On the day itself it shows “Today” instead of a number. Once a holiday has passed, it moves on to the same holiday next year.
Under the number you get the same count in weeks and days, the target date on the Ethiopian and Gregorian calendars with its day of the week, and a live clock counting down to midnight at the start of that day in your time zone.
Fixed and movable holidays
Enkutatash, Meskel and Timket fall on the same Ethiopian date every year: Meskerem 1, Meskerem 17 and Tir 11. On the Gregorian calendar that is September 11, September 27 and January 19, each one day later in some years because of how the two calendars handle leap years. Genna is the exception: it is Tahsas 29, but moves to Tahsas 28 in the year after an Ethiopian leap year, so it always falls on January 7.
Fasika (Ethiopian Easter) moves every year. Its date comes from the Bahire Hasab, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church's way of computing the fasting season and Easter, and it always falls on a Sunday between early April and early May. Good Friday (Siklet) is two days before it.
Counting down to a birthday or another date
Choose “My birthday” and enter your date of birth in the Ethiopian or Gregorian calendar. The countdown uses the calendar you entered it in, so an Ethiopian birthday lands on the same Ethiopian date every year. A Pagume 6 birthday is counted on Pagume 5 in years that have no Pagume 6.
Choose “Custom date” to count the days to a wedding, a trip or any other day. A date in the past shows how many days ago it was.

Frequently asked questions
How many days until Ethiopian New Year?
The countdown opens on Ethiopian New Year (Enkutatash) and shows the number of days left from today. Enkutatash is on Meskerem 1, which is September 11, or September 12 in the year before a Gregorian leap year.
How many days until Genna (Ethiopian Christmas)?
Pick Genna in the countdown to see the days left. Genna is celebrated on 7 January, the 29th of Tahsas in the Ethiopian calendar, after an Advent fast of about 43 days (Tsome Nebiyat).
When is Timket?
Timket, the Ethiopian Epiphany, is on Tir 11, which is January 19 (January 20 in some years). The eve, Ketera, is the day before. Pick Timket in the countdown to see how many days are left.
Why does the date of Fasika change every year?
Fasika is a movable feast. Like Easter in other churches it depends on the moon, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church calculates it with the Bahire Hasab, so it lands on a different Sunday each year, often a week or more after Western Easter.
Is the countdown in Ethiopian time?
Days are counted from today's date on your device, and the live clock counts down to midnight in your own time zone. If you are outside Ethiopia, the holiday may already have started in Addis Ababa when your clock still shows a few hours left.
