This is an estimate only. An ultrasound scan and your health worker give the most accurate due date.

How the due date is calculated

The calculator uses Naegele's rule, the standard first estimate: the due date is 280 days (40 weeks) after the first day of the last menstrual period. The count uses real calendar days, so it already allows for the 5 or 6 days of Pagume and for leap years.

The rule assumes a 28-day cycle, with ovulation about two weeks after the period starts. If your cycle is usually longer or shorter, set the average cycle length: every date moves later or earlier by the difference from 28 days. For example, a 32-day cycle moves the due date 4 days later.

Pregnancy weeks are counted from the first day of the last period, not from conception, so at conception a pregnancy is already about 2 weeks along. The second trimester starts at week 14 and the third at week 28.

Working it out on the Ethiopian calendar

Because every Ethiopian month has 30 days, 280 days is 9 months and 10 days. To estimate a due date by hand, count 9 months forward from the first day of the last period, skipping Pagume, add 10 days, then go back 5 days (6 in a leap year) if Pagume falls in between. For example, a last period starting on Meskerem 1, 2018 gives a due date of Sene 11, 2018 (June 18, 2026).

The due date shown in Ge'ez script uses the Amharic month names; the line under it gives the same Ethiopian date in Latin letters and the Gregorian date, so it can be matched with a clinic card or appointment written in either calendar.

Why it is only an estimate

Cycle lengths, the day of ovulation and the time it takes to implant all vary, so a due date from the last period can be off by a week or more. Only a small share of babies, commonly cited as around 4 to 5 percent, are born on the due date itself. A birth from 37 weeks on counts as term.

An ultrasound scan in early pregnancy usually gives a more accurate date. If a health worker gives you a different due date from a scan, use theirs.

Pregnancy milestones by week

Weeks are counted from the first day of the last period, so 40 weeks pregnant is 280 days after that date. The third column shows the same span in 30-day Ethiopian months; if Pagume falls inside it, the date lands 5 or 6 days earlier than the plain month count suggests.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my due date in the Ethiopian calendar?

Enter the first day of your last period as an Ethiopian date. The calculator adds 280 days and shows the due date in Ethiopian and Gregorian dates. By hand, add 9 Ethiopian months and 10 days, and go back 5 or 6 days if the count passes through Pagume.

How many months is a pregnancy in the Ethiopian calendar?

A full-term pregnancy of 40 weeks is 280 days, which is 9 Ethiopian months and 10 days, or a little less when the 5 or 6 days of Pagume fall inside the pregnancy.

How many weeks pregnant am I?

Count from the first day of your last period to today. This count is the gestational age, the number doctors and midwives use. The calculator shows it in weeks and days, along with the trimester you are in.

What if I don't know the date of my last period?

This calculator needs that date. Without it, an ultrasound scan is the usual way to estimate how far along the pregnancy is and when the baby is due. Ask a health worker.

Is this calculator a substitute for a doctor or midwife?

No. It gives an estimate from the date you enter. A health worker, usually with an ultrasound, gives the accurate due date and the care you need during pregnancy.
