International Labour Day, or May Day, falls on 1 May and is a public holiday in Ethiopia. Part of a global celebration of workers, it honours the contribution of working people and the movement for fair and dignified labour rights.

A celebration of workers

May Day is observed around the world as a day to recognise the value of work and the achievements of the labour movement in winning fair wages, safe conditions and reasonable hours. In Ethiopia it is a national holiday shared by workers across every sector.

How Labour Day is marked

Trade unions and workers' associations hold rallies, marches and public events, and the day is used to highlight the concerns and aspirations of Ethiopia's workforce. For many it is also simply a well-earned day of rest with family.
