Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Day celebrates the diversity of Ethiopia's many ethnic groups and the rights guaranteed to them under the country's constitution, adopted on 8 December 1994. It is a vivid, colourful public holiday of culture, language, music and dress.
Unity in diversity
Ethiopia is home to dozens of nations, nationalities and peoples, each with its own language, dress and traditions. The day marks the constitution that affirmed their equal rights and their place in a shared federal state, and it is a celebration of that pluralism.
How the day is celebrated
Each year a different city or region hosts the national celebration, filling streets and stadiums with traditional music, dance, cuisine and colourful regional dress from across the country. Exhibitions and cultural performances highlight the heritage of Ethiopia's many communities.
