Mawlid — Moulid in Ethiopia — celebrates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. A national public holiday, it is marked with devotional gatherings, the recitation of his life and praises, and, at Ethiopia's great Islamic shrines, large and colourful pilgrimages.

Honouring the Prophet

Mawlid is a day to remember the life, character and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Communities gather to recite poetry and praises in his honour, share his story, and reflect on the values of compassion, generosity and devotion associated with him.

How Mawlid is celebrated

Mosques and homes host evening gatherings filled with chanting, prayer and communal meals. In Ethiopia, Mawlid also draws pilgrims to revered shrines, where celebrations can last for days with processions, singing and green banners.

Charity, hospitality and the sharing of food with neighbours and the poor are central to the day.

Greeting someone at Mawlid

A warm greeting is “Melkam Mawlid” or simply “Mawlid Mubarak” — a blessed Mawlid. Sharing a card is a kind way to send your wishes.
